John William Godward (1861–1922)

Godward was an English Neoclassicist painter. His art featured beautiful women wearing the flowing clothing of the Greco-Roman period and featured the beautiful marble columns that were emblematic of that time. This style of art fell out of favor as people began to embrace modern art, and even though his art is today experiencing something of a resurgence, Godward is still not as appreciated as he perhaps should be. As a young man, his desire to become an artist was so objectionable to his family that they disinherited him and he died tragically, committing suicide at age 61. In his suicide note, he wrote that “the world is not big enough for myself and a Picasso.” When he died, his family burned all his papers and photos.
